Ónodi vár

Ónod Castle

The oldest historical monument of the village of Ónod, located along the Sajó River, is its fortress with four corner bastions, which has survived many wars — Ónod Castle.

The castle is situated between the village and the Sajó River; it can be accessed from the center of the village by turning off the main road 3606 onto Vár Street.
It stands on a gravelly-sandy river terrace, rising 5–6 meters above what was once a marshy environment.
The surrounding rivers and streams — the Sajó, Hernád, Hejő, and Szinva — made this flood-free elevation difficult to access and easy to defend during the Middle Ages. The castle served to protect the Sajó crossing and the important routes heading east.
